Snakes

A couple of weeks ago Shun Shifu was discussing some cobra principles in the green belt group. One of the points he touched on was the cobra ritual of pushing the opponents head to the ground. I found a video of rattlesnakes doing this combat. Hope you all enjoy this.

Rattlesnake arm wrestling

I was completely unaware that rattlesnakes did this. Thought it was just a cobra thing. Very cool.

Something to think about is mongoose principle. As you can see the snakes recognize that the other is weak and essentially disabled when stretched out. So the are trying to get in dominant position to stretch the other. This is a very mongoose principle as mongoose fight snakes. Stretching the opponent through positioning is typical of mongoose. By positioning I not only mean a position of strength but also taunting to lure the opponent to extend enough to take advantage of and get them fully extended and weak.

This strategy is very important for symmetrical application. You need to get your opponent to extend. Typically a mongoose will taunt while maintaining what he feels is a comfortable distance line. Fast springy footwork and sensing distance line allows this. Then when the opponent throws enough of a strike to commit the mongoose reacts to the opponents attack.

I went to an MMA fight last night and was really amazed at the lack of any kind of strategy. While I have seen strategy used in these fights occassioanlly there certainly wasn't any last night.

Perhaps I should teach a little more mongoose footwork in the Tuesday night symmetrical fighting class. I haven't really worked on that with you guys. Themongoose also has an incredible ability to be "slippery" which is great for escaping holds.

Interested?

BTW I embeded the code for the Youtube for you. You probably don't have the capability to do this but I'll put it onto my list to program into this site. I'll also give the ability to upload your own videos very soon.
