Shou Shu He-The Old School Card

Shifu Tony Salindong's picture

Hello

I am new to the site and have been browsing around.  I would like to thank Shun Shifu Weaver for allowing me into his house.  Just a question for some of you out there.  Anybody here remember or know the old 3rd brown card- Shifting Spears, Shooting Stars.... I didn't know to many who had learned it and I got a great lesson on them from Shun Shifu Clark back in the day when I went to afternoon BB group and I was the only one to show up! It was awesome.  Anyway thanks for the hospitality and I figured this would be a cool first topic.

well tell everbody that Da Shifu Clark says hi and as for the mongoose he is working on mine right now, he said he tryed to register but is not able to yet, when he is let in then you all can ask him personly about the old brown as he learned it from Da Shifu Sr. when it was still in the belts

He's in

I just let him in. Can we call him Da Shifu Clark? If so that's way freakin cool

Great to have you

Hey Shifu,

Great to have you.

I was never formally schooled in that card but did get them later. They had some really cool and unusual motions. Lot's of really snappy bear and more.

I believe they were all kempo techniques so they could probably be found (at least the mkempo version) on youtube. since I happen to have the card in front of me I'll post it

  1. Shifting Spears
  2. Shooting Star
  3. Praying Mantis
  4. Drums of Manchu
  5. Sowing the seed
  6. Parting the Waves
  7. Crossing Swords
  8. Brushing the Wind
  9. Striking the Gong
  10. Double Evasion
  11. Crossing the Mountain
  12. Spiraling Heels
  13. Ascending to Heaven (we actually put that one back in our purple)
  14. The Cobra (a lot like the first move in the hand set)
  15. Thrusting Spear
  16. Reversing Hammers

Cool stuff. I figured I'd do a seminar on them one day

This is great, I am glad

This is great, I am glad that I could get some responses on my first post. Shun Shifu Weaver I would like to add several items of thought for all to think about.  These are some ideas I learned from both Shun Shifu Clark and my original instructor.  Shifting Spears and Praying Mantis are ways of dealing with opposite attacks.  SS has the bad guy throwing a right with left forward and PM is left with right forward, also PM is the first time the Hard Cat Stance was shown to me.  Crossing Swords shows power generation from the changing of stances w/o footwork or foot movement, Sowing the Seed = Mongoose, Reversing Hammers twin tech is Twirling Cobras.  And someone help me out with Spiraling Heels, learned several variations but it has always been an elusive tech.  Shun Shifu mind doing a quick write up to help out.  As always I learned these awhile ago and the ideas are the way I remember the techs. Enjoy and a seminar on these would be really cool !!

Sowing the Seed

Actually I'd love to get some input on this from someone who went through these belts when they were in the system. Shifu Ferrero has some incredible knowledge of them as I'm sure Shun Shifu Clark does.

Are you saying that Sowing the Seed is equivalent to the kempo technique called mongoose. Obviously it's nothing like the shou' shu' technique mongoose. I've always done sowing the seed with Mantis footwork and cobra hands. However if I remember correctly I believe Shifu Ferrero did it with mongoose footwork. Could have been his twist on the technique or I could be wrong altogether. What do you know about that?

no its not mongoose and I did not tell you that I think you got confused, it does not use mantis foot work eather

HINT who claws you in then punces back at you? Wink

Da Shifu Clark Thank you for

Da Shifu Clark

Thank you for clarifying I did not mean to misrepresnt or mispeak on a lesson.  Shun Shifu Weaver beat me to it, I signed on read your hint did Sowing the Seed 25 times or so then logged back on to say I am thinking Tiger.  And yes we would love a tune up on that card.

A tune up is in order

Looks like all of us out here on the west coast might need a bit of a tune up on that card.

I'm guessing it's kitty

Shun Shifu Weaver, The way

Shun Shifu Weaver,

The way Shun Shifu Clark explained was the body motion is mongoose, sorry I was not clear when I put "=mongoose" I meant the beast not the Kenpo equivalent.  During our review the hips were the focus, power was derived from the twisting/rotation of the hips back & forth while keeping the hands in time with the body. If I remember correctly Mantis has no hips so the whole body moves as one unit, the mpongoose version or the way I learned it was as explained above and it sounds similar to Shifu Ferrero's version. The Kenpo equivalent is NOTHING compared to the Shou Shu version when comparing power principles. Hope that helps and I would still like some insight on Spirling Heels :-)

thanks and salute

Sowing the Seed

Well now that Da' Shifu Clark is aboard we can get a definitive answer.

Yes your correct in your description of the mantis moving as a unit. That is how I learned Sowing the Seed. A step correct back, a step correct in, and then one step for the punch on the end. I seem to remember Da' Shifu teaching it that way at some point. Not sure though. It might have been something that came in during that cobra with mantis feet phase. How it was originally taught I have no idea. I wasn't there.

Sign me up for the seminar whenever.  I remember you teaching 5,9 13, and Shifu Ferrero showing the Cobra which was awesome, an immediate, fast, shocking maneuver.  When you show these techniques I appreciate how you place them historically with the evolution of the techniques we have.

Welcome!

Hi Shifu,

Welcome and glad to have you.  You'll find all sorts of cool blogs and photos on the site.  Shifu Gerrals might remember those techniques.
