Russian Martial Arts
The last guy that i found out here that claimed to be a Shifu from California vanished and moved on, can't say Im sorry because he didn't seem to have what Shifu Sefraph did even though he claimed to be a 5th degree.
I ran across another guy who studied the Russian Martial Arts, I've been training with him off and on for the past couple of months. I was surprised to find that there is a considerable amount of motion in the Russian system that is alot like that in Shou Shu...however they seem to be lacking alot of the power thats found in Shou Shu stances. I do feel that its helping me with my flow, and mixing it with proper Shou Shu stances is developing the power it should have.
Has anyone here examined the Russian Martial Arts system? If so I would like to hear their input on the similarities. Thanks!
-Jack

Systema
I've seen it and if I remember correctly it reminded me of Krav Maga with a little Aikido influence. Didn't look into it much though.
I would think Mr. Yermolovich would know something about it since he's from Russia (or whatever you call it :-) )
Systema
Hey Jack., If it is Systema look at Akido and I beleive Savat. I beleive Systema is a mixture of those 2 and maybe other Arts as well. Of what I have seen of Sytema it appears to be very Akido influened but adds some thing of another art that I have seen but can't put my finger on right now. Mr Miller

Systema...think thats it...
I think thats what it is....I'll have to ask the guy again. He learned from Vladimir Vasilev (I think thats how you spell it), the constant motion and movement with the opponent seems very similar to Shou Shu....but the stances aren't nearly as strong and they dont tend to drive as deeply in on their opponent as we do...at least not as often. Some of the movements do drive in pretty deep. There is a fair amount of joint manipulation, but its not like Chin Na...

Hmm as far as I know there
Hmm as far as I know there were not any Martial Arts in "Russia" that are similar to Shou Shu. Then again, Russia, it is kind of broad term, can you give more specifics?
Alex.
Systema
Hey Jack, Are you referring to the Russian art of Systema? They do have other arts as well that seem to have become popular through MMA fights. Mr Miller

Hello there Jack!

A very popular system studied in that area is Sambo. Sambo has been around for many years but it has evolved to be a modern mixed martial arts fighting system. Since Shou Shu is a highly refined striking art which emphasizes the physics of striking and putting the power in strikes utilizing proper body motion and alignment, I can see where there could certainly be some similarities between a shou shu practitioner and one of sambo. Would be interesting to see if your russian colleague had some sambo influence somewhere along the way...
Happy training!
