Shifu Nugent
Hello Everyone:
I am new to this site, my name is Shifu Steve Nugent. I am a student from the Rancho Cordova School, so I guess that makes me a oldtimer. I started Shou Shu after I saw a commerical on channel 40 about Moores Karate, I think it was November 1981. I called and setup an appointment for the next day. The first guy I saw was tall guy about 25 he had a black belt with two small circular patches at the end of his belt, he said he name was Shifu Young. I watch him for a few minutes as he was kicking the heavy bag. Each time he kick the bag it flew back 5 or 6 feet, to say I was impressed was an understatement. A few minutes later a very nice lady came out an introduce herself as Marilyn. She shown me where I could change and get ready for my first lesson. As I went to the locker room I saw an Old guy in coveralls working on the hot tub, he was reaching for a pipe wrench that was just out of reach so I bend down and hand it to him, he smiled and said thanks, I went in changed into gi pants and got on the mat waiting for my first lesson. Five minutes later a man came out the office in this cool looking black gi, ( I had never seen a black gi before) with a black belt with a gold stripe and a bunch of circular patches at the end of his belt. He smiled and introduce himself as Da Shifu. He looked very familar but I just could not place where I had seen him before. Da Shifu taught me Raising Knee, and a wheel kick that first lesson. After the lesson was over he stuck out his hand an shook mine hand and said thank you again for handing me the pipe wrench. It was just then that I realize that I just got my first lesson from the hot tub repairman. That was almost 28 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. Later on after I had tested for by Black belt Da Shifu said to me something like this " I remember the day when you walk into the school I bet at that time you never thought you would learn so much from the maintenance man".

Hi Shifu Nugent
I think modern tigers spend a lot of time sitting at their desks...this is why my legs are gonna KILL ME when Shifu Hashimoto comes back. I think I'll go eat a steak and take a nap, hahaha.
Shifu Nugent, you'll get used to my humor eventually!
We'd love to meet you, thanks for joining us on the site and you are always welcome in the school. If you ever have any ?? about the schedule just call or email.

Welcome Shifu Nugent
Hi Shifu how are you? Don't know if you remember me but I met you back in 1985 at the Rancho school when my brother and I were white belts and you and Shifu Varney were brown belts. Did not really get a chance to get to know you guys real well but you gave us a couple of private lessons on blocks.Da Shifu Smith was the Shun Shifu back then and he was a second degree. Kind of lost touch with you as we did not see you once the school moved to Sacramento. You are welcome to carpool with us if you want as I try to go down there once a week although I 've been away for a few months. If you are reading this Shun Shifu I'm ready to get back to the task of getting some new color on my belt, you know the one with the asian writing on it hint hint... lol..just kidding... take that back ,not really...lol..just been letting all of those yearly lessons season in. Been practicing though and my wife and kids are tired of me asking them to be dummies for my techniques. Tell Shifu Liz to get those legs ready because shou shu tigers don't just eat and then take naps like the ones in the zoo that she likes so much. Welcome again Shifu it's good to hear from someone from the good ol days. Hope to see you soon.
Shifu Hashimoto

Hi DaShifu Clark: It's great
Hi DaShifu Clark:
It's great to hear from you. Yes it has been a long time. I still remember the lesson you gave me on the inward block, just awesome. I still train 3 days a week still working on stuff that I learn in the 80's. Have two sons 14, and 16 and teach them, the Shou Shu that I know all the time. About five years ago I went back to the studio, but it was different and I just never felt very welcome. I am going to see Shifu Weaver sometime this November.

That's a great Story
What a fantastic story. And so typical of Da' Shifu.
Yeah it's pretty darn amazing what I learned from the tractor repair man.

Yes, of course that would be OK.
We're here to put Shou' shu' back together and anyone who's interested in preserving it is a friend of ours.
You might hook up with Shifu Hashimoto. He and Mr. Woodard commute down here together.
