About matthew miller
Martial Arts have been something in my life I have always been interested in. My interest began when I was little watching the poorly dubbed Chinese action films with stars like Gordon Lu and Bruce Lee. I always liked the different animal Kung Fu styles in the Chinese period films. I did start in a martial art style when I was young but quickly became bored with that style and did not stay long. It wasn't until I had graduated High School and was waiting for my military service to begin that I went back to taking classes. Remembering those childhood movies, I wanted to try an animal based system this time. The only place I found that was close enough to ride a bike to was the Lodi Quan.
In 1991, I started my study of Shou' Shu' at the Lodi Quan under Shifu Pat Perez. However, my training was cut short due to my military obligation and I left the Lodi Quan as an orange belt. Needless to say I was hooked. The way the Shifus moved with grace and power was to me awesome and at the same time beautiful.
After my military obligation was up, I came back to the Lodi Quan and was in and out of training up until 1999 when I left, what I thought at the time was, for good. I had taken a career opportunity out of state. During My time at the Lodi Quan I was taught by some great Shifus and learned a lot from them. Shifus like Shun Shifu Reizwig, Shifu Brazil, Shifu Amada, Shifu Rishwain, and Shifu Ferrero to name a few. I ended up leaving this time as a blue belt.
As life changes, it seems, so do living locations, I found myself back in the area again in 2005. I took a job I just could not pass up. In 2006 I started my training again this time in Valley Springs under Shun Shifu Weaver. I feel I have been very fortunate in being able to continue Shou Shu the way I was origionally taught. The level of instruction that I continue to receive is awesome.
Shun Shifu Weaver, Shifu Lance and Shifu Liz have inspired me to push myself to that next level, to be not only a better martial artist but a better person. I hope to be able to pass these teachings on someday.
